Why do the transition elements have higher enthalpies of atomisation? In 3d series (Sc to Zn), which element has the lowest enthalpy of atomisation and why?
Answer
Answer
AIBecause transition elements have a large number of unpaired $d$ electrons, which take part in strong metallic bonding along with the $ns$ electrons, their enthalpies of atomisation are high.
Zinc has the lowest enthalpy of atomisation in the 3d series because its $d^{10}$ configuration has no unpaired $d$ electrons, so only the two $4s$ electrons form weak metallic bonds.
