Give reasons for the following.
Why is Mn²⁺ ion more stable than Fe²⁺ ion? (Atomic number of Mn = 25 and Fe = 26)
Why is $\text{Mn}^{2+}$ ion more stable than $\text{Fe}^{2+}$ ion?
(Atomic number of $\text{Mn} = 25$ and $\text{Fe} = 26$)
Answer
Answer
Because $\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}$ has the half-filled $3d^5$ configuration, which is extra stable, whereas $\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}$ is $3d^6$ and easily loses one electron to become $3d^5$.
