(a) Substitution in Hockey: Substitution refers to replacing an on-field player with a reserve player from the team bench during the match. In field hockey, rolling (unlimited) substitution is permitted at any time during play, except during the awarding and taking of a penalty corner (unless the defending goalkeeper is injured). Procedure of substitution: 1. Substitutions must only be made at the designated substitution area situated on the sideline near the centre line. 2. No permission is required from the field umpires to execute a substitution. 3. The player being substituted must completely leave the field of play across the sideline before the substitute player is permitted to enter. 4. Time is not stopped for standard substitutions, except for the substitution of an injured goalkeeper. 5. A player serving a temporary suspension (green or yellow card) cannot be substituted during their suspension time.
