AI(i) Baton: a smooth, hollow tube, 28 to 30 cm long, made of wood, metal or other rigid material, carried by each runner of a relay team and passed within the take-over zone.
(ii) Marathon: a long-distance road race of 42.195 km.
(iii) Hurdling: a race in which the athletes run and clear a series of hurdles placed at fixed distances, for example 110 m hurdles for men and 100 m hurdles for women.
(iv) Take off area: the area or board from which the athlete jumps in the long jump or triple jump; the take-off board is 1.22 m long and 20 cm wide, and the jump is measured from its edge nearest the landing pit.
(v) Approach run: the run an athlete takes before a jump or throw to gain speed and momentum, as in the long jump, high jump and javelin throw.
