How will you bring about the following conversion?
Benzene from phenol. Iodoform from ethanol.
(i)[1.0]
Benzene from phenol.
(ii)[1.0]
Iodoform from ethanol.
Answer
Answer (i)
AIEquation: $\mathrm{C_{6}H_{5}OH} + \mathrm{Zn} \xrightarrow{\text{heat}} \mathrm{C_{6}H_{6}} + \mathrm{ZnO}$
Phenol is distilled with zinc dust to give benzene.
Answer (ii)
AIEquation: $\mathrm{CH_{3}CH_{2}OH} + 4\mathrm{I_{2}} + 6\mathrm{NaOH} \xrightarrow{\text{warm}} \mathrm{CHI_{3}} + \mathrm{HCOONa} + 5\mathrm{NaI} + 5\mathrm{H_{2}O}$
Ethanol is warmed with iodine and sodium hydroxide (iodoform reaction) to give iodoform.
