Write chemical equations to convert each of the following:
(a)[1.0]
Acetic acid to acetaldehyde
(b)[1.0]
Formaldehyde to urotropine
Answer
Answer (a)
Official answer keyEquations: $\mathrm{CH_{3}COOH} + \mathrm{SOCl_{2}} \longrightarrow \mathrm{CH_{3}COCl} + \mathrm{SO_{2}} + \mathrm{HCl}$ $\mathrm{CH_{3}COCl} + \mathrm{H_{2}} \xrightarrow{\text{Pd}\text{/}\mathrm{BaSO_{4}}} \mathrm{CH_{3}CHO} + \mathrm{HCl}$
Acetic acid is converted to acetyl chloride, which is reduced (Rosenmund) to acetaldehyde.
Answer (b)
Official answer keyEquation: $6\mathrm{HCHO} + 4\mathrm{NH_{3}} \longrightarrow \mathrm{C_{6}H_{12}N_{4}} + 6\mathrm{H_{2}O}$
Formaldehyde condenses with ammonia to give urotropine (hexamethylenetetramine).
