Chemistry20272 marksShort answer
Observe the diagram below of splitting of d-orbital in octahedral field and answer the following questions.
Splitting of d-orbital in octahedral field
Splitting of d-orbital in octahedral field
(a)[1.0]
Identify the electronic configuration of $d^5$ ion, if $\Delta_o < P$.
(b)[1.0]
Comment on the relationship between crystal field stabilisation energy ($\Delta_o$) and the strength of the ligand.

Answer

Answer (a)

Official answer key
For a $d^5$ ion with $\Delta_o < P$ (weak field), the electrons occupy all five orbitals singly before pairing: $t_{2g}^3 e_g^2$.

Answer (b)

Official answer key
The stronger the ligand, the larger the crystal field splitting $\Delta_o$, so the greater the crystal field stabilisation energy; a large $\Delta_o$ means a strong-field ligand and a low spin complex.
