During an experiment, a scientist tried to determine the molecular mass of a protein by applying elevation of boiling point method but did not succeed. When she used osmotic pressure method, she found that $20\text{ g}$ of protein in $2$ litres solution had an osmotic pressure of $0\cdot0171\text{ atm}$ at $25^\circ\text{C}$.
Why was the scientist unsuccessful in determining the molecular mass by using elevation of boiling point method?
Answer
Answer
AIBecause a protein has a very high molar mass, so a solution of it has a very small molality and the elevation of boiling point is too small to measure accurately; proteins are also unstable (denatured) at the boiling point.
