Potassium permanganate on reaction with potassium iodide in acidic medium releases iodine gas…
Potassium permanganate on reaction with potassium iodide in acidic medium releases iodine gas, water and the sulphates of potassium and manganese. Give the balanced equation for the reaction.
Answer
Answer
AIEquation: $2\mathrm{KMnO_{4}} + 8\mathrm{H_{2}SO_{4}} + 10\mathrm{KI} \longrightarrow 6\mathrm{K_{2}SO_{4}} + 2\mathrm{MnSO_{4}} + 8\mathrm{H_{2}O} + 5\mathrm{I_{2}}$
Potassium permanganate oxidises iodide to iodine in dilute sulphuric acid; $\mathrm{MnO_4^-}$ is reduced to $\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}$ (5 electrons) and each $\mathrm{I^-}$ gives one electron.
