According to Crystal-Field Theory, the electronic configuration of complex compound [A] is $t_{2g}^4 e_g^2$ and that of complex compound [B] is $t_{2g}^6 e_g^0$.
Does complex [A] have strong field ligands or weak field ligands? Give a reason.
Answer
Answer
AIWeak field ligands. In [A] the $e_g$ orbitals are occupied ($t_{2g}^4 e_g^2$) before the $t_{2g}$ electrons are paired, which happens only when the splitting $\Delta_o$ is smaller than the pairing energy, i.e. the ligands are weak field (high spin complex).
