In the reaction $2\text{NO} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow 2\text{NO}_2$, the rate law is rate $= k[\text{NO}][\text{O}_2]^2$. Write the order of reaction if $[\text{NO}]$ concentration is in large excess.

Answer

Answer

Order $= 2$. If $[\text{NO}]$ is in large excess its concentration stays practically constant, so rate $= k'[\text{O}_2]^2$ with $k' = k[\text{NO}]$ (a pseudo second order reaction).
