What are isotonic solutions? Why does the phenomenon of osmosis not occur when two isotonic solutions are separated by a semi-permeable membrane?
Answer
Answer
AIIsotonic solutions are solutions having the same osmotic pressure at the same temperature.
Osmosis does not occur because there is no difference in osmotic pressure (concentration) across the semi-permeable membrane, so solvent passes through at equal rates in both directions and there is no net flow.
