Answer the following.
Explain why is paramagnetic but is diamagnetic. (at. no. of Cu = 29)
Explain why $\text{Cu}^{2+}$ is paramagnetic but $\text{Cu}^+$ is diamagnetic.
(at. no. of Cu = 29)
Answer
Answer
AIBecause $\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}$ ($3d^9$) has one unpaired electron, it is paramagnetic, whereas $\mathrm{Cu^{+}}$ ($3d^{10}$) has all its electrons paired, so it is diamagnetic.
