Arrange the following in the order asked.
Decreasing order of basic strength in gas phase: , , and .
Decreasing order of basic strength in gas phase:
$\text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{NH}_2$, $(\text{C}_2\text{H}_5)_2\text{NH}$, $(\text{C}_2\text{H}_5)_3\text{N}$ and $\text{NH}_3$.
Answer
Answer
AIOrder, first to last: (C2H5)3N, (C2H5)2NH, C2H5NH2, NH3
$(\mathrm{C_2H_5})_3\mathrm{N} > (\mathrm{C_2H_5})_2\mathrm{NH} > \mathrm{C_2H_5NH_2} > \mathrm{NH_3}$
Because in the gas phase only the +I effect operates, so basic strength rises with the number of alkyl groups.
